Unicode encoding is elegant, until it added combining characters.
As for ASCII, I am well aware of its invisible characters. I am a veteran of many many years in the trenches fighting tab wars. (Is it 4 spaces?, or 8? 3?) I eventually realized that the only solution is to never use tab characters.
People use markup languages for formatting - Markdown, style sheets, Latex, etc. Unicode's markup is just a sad, crappy reinvention of actual markup languages.
