None of his money was made by passively investing in companies, but creating and/or leading them.

Someone (like me) who buy shares in companies without contributing to their leadership and management is an investor.

Someone who creates a company and lead them as CEO or CTO is not "an investor" but a businessman.

He made these multibillion companies from almost scratch. How can his approach "translate poorly"? Can you name one person who created as many billion-dollar companies as Musk?



Tesla and SpaceX were built off the backs of brilliant engineers; what Elon did was provide funding, both personally and through other investors, while being a brilliant marketer. Up until he went off the right-wing deep-end that was his forte. Just his hyping of autonomous driving and Tesla as an innovative tech company years ago pushed the company to being more valuable than the Big 3 and Toyota combined, which in retrospect is a bit absurd.
