Hacker Newsnew | past | comments | ask | show | jobs | submitlogin

Anecdotally, I've heard from HR professionals that posting on Hacker News isn't a particularly effective method for attracting candidates. Perhaps this could be the reason.

Yeah my company has posted a couple of times and despite saying US only, we only got people from SEA and Eastern Europe...so we stopped posting.

Does the location it's posted really affect that significantly? Isn't it similar to any job board?

Not quite sure quite what you're asking. But I think, yes it affects it, we can't hire people outside of the US and given we got no candidates we could feasibly employ, it doesn't make sense to continue posting.

He’s suggesting that when posting the same job listing in places such as LinkedIn, you still get the same people from SEA applying anyway.

The few times I’ve had LinkedIn Premium and had a look at where other applicants were from, I’d notice the majority was from SEA or Africa, even though the posting clearly required EU residency/work permit.

Yeah I mentioned it to our hiring department. They said they had tried it in the past for about 3 months, got plenty of applicants but none of them actually met the requirements. A lot of people who couldn't speak English or with only internship experience applying for a senior dev position.

I did some experimenting in the past with posting jobs on the HN who's hiring threads, and I found that I got about 10x more candidates when I included a salary with the post then without.
