Yeah this comes up often as "mayday" is clear and short compared to the more usual American phraseology "I am declaring an emergency."

I'm not sure why US avaiation has not changed that, but they have a lingo and seem to stick with it.



US Pilots do use Mayday, but I'm not sure what the percent is. If you are squawking the emergency code you should at least use Pan-Pan, right?
