Ask HN: Where do I get a headset for my big head

Not sure if I have a big head, just a big jar, or if I’m just over sensitive - But I really dislike how tight standard headsets squeeze my head. I currently wear some old beats that I’ve broken and taped back together, so they apply no pressure at all. But it don’t look too good, and they easily fall off my head. I cant seem to find a headset thats adjustable. The standard pull down adjustments don’t really affect how tight the squeeze is, atleast bot enough for me.


I have a kind of fat head compared to others, and the most comfortable headsets I've found are the SteelSeries Arctis 3 or 5 (I've got both, they have the same shape, only difference I can notice is the Arctis 5 has RGB lighting on it). I have a hard time imagining not using them.

They're pretty sturdy too, I've had the Arctis 5 for about 3 years now and it still works perfect, no noticeable wear and tear.

I found them by going to Best Buy and trying on the headphones they had on display there. All the other ones they had were a bit uncomfortable, but these stood out as being really comfortable. You can also get them on Amazon.

Not the only person who thinks that, here's an excerpt from a review on Amazon:

"I've also tried many of Arctis' other headsets, including the newer ones and none of them fit like this one does. I have a big head and all the newer versions of their headsets are too small, or put pressure in the wrong spots on my head, or the ear cuffs are too small and don't fit my ears."

And this is from another review:

I can vouch for my Arctis 5 to be the most comfortable PC Headset I've ever bought. I had to replace mine after ~3 years due to multiple parts slowly failing (cable, plugs, volume knob on the headset).


I had the same problem until I landed on the Aftershokz (now just Shokz). The design works better for fatter heads like mine. After about 10 hours they start to irritate and I'll take a break from the headset, but that's a lot better than others.


I should have mentioned this, but the noise canceling part is the sole reason for me actually wearing headphones. I wear earplugs+headphones in an attempt to focus in an open office.


You might consider shoulder speakers. There are different kinds. Mine is a 3 inch wide elastic band that contains two bluetooth speakers that rest near my ears.


Do you wear glasses?

With glasses, having some soft cushion is the best, like the ones from RAZR.

Without glasses, go for studio ones and have a separated mic. Sennheiser hd280 pro is the one i like.


I have a small head. Everything isn't fitting enough. I stick to in ears.


I have a fairly big head, most hats don't fit me - I use Bose QC35s
