I was at a retail technology conference ~1998 and I remember IBM presenting their work in the area; point of sale cameras was the topic.

Not as advanced as this, obviously, but industry has been thinking about ways to do automated visual analysis like this for a long time.

Can confirm, this was already a thing 20 years ago.
